True legend

Gary Lewis, 35, from Motherwell, has supported the local side for 25 years.

He said: "Phil O'Donnell was a true legend as a footballer and a human being.

"It was a good send-off, he was a local guy done good."

Inspiration to children

Michael, 15, from Bellshill, was at the game when O'Donnell collapsed. His mother Lorraine was outside.

Michael said: "I thought he was a good player. He tried his hardest and was a good captain. I was gutted and upset."

Lorraine added: "Phil O'Donnell was a great inspiration to children."

Absolute gentleman

Daniel Moore, 33, from Carfin, said O'Donnell had regained form and was central to a successful team.

He said: "I take my six-year-old son to training and he would come over. I'm here for his family.

"He was a gentleman. An absolute gentleman."

Great footballer

Jack and Helen Reid, 54 and 62, from Lanark, attended the funeral to pay their respects to a "real gentleman".

Mr Reid said: "He was a tribute to football all over the world. An excellent gentleman."

Mrs Reid added: "He was a great footballer, he never forgot his roots."

Show of strength

Peter Elder, 33, from Motherwell, said he wanted to present a show of strength for Phil O'Donnell's family.

He said: "It's important to show respect for a player who gave everything to football.

"We've lost a friend and a family man."

Fitting tribute

Linda Bulloch, 44, and Tom Coyle, seven, from Burnside, unfurled a Motherwell flag as the funeral cortege passed.

Ms Bulloch said: "I'm here to give Tom an understanding of Phil O'Donnell, who he met when he was a mascot a few weeks ago.

"He'll never be forgotten. I'm sure there will be a fitting tribute"
