James McFadden

McFadden winner dedicated to Phil O'Donnell

James McFadden, the Scotland striker, produced arguably the most poignant celebration of the Premier League season yesterday and then dedicated the second- half goal that sealed Everton's victory at the Riverside to tragic compatriot Phil O'Donnell

In a touching tribute, McFadden grasped his black armband and pointed skywards after slotting home the goal that clinched three points for Everton after Andy Johnson's had scored. Later, he broke down in tears when he was taken off towards the end of an emotional afternoon for the former Motherwell player as he reflected on O'Donnell who died Saturday after collapsing in action for the Scottish Premier League club.

"I had a feeling I was going to score today and that I would dedicate it to Phil," McFadden said last night. "In the end I just thought it was the right thing to do because I'd not been able to see his family. I've passed on my regards but I just felt that this was the way I wanted to pass on my respects.

"I shed a tear when I came off. It had been a very emotional occasion with the pre-match silence that broke into rapturous applause.

"It's been so shocking for me. I'm still struggling to get my head round that he's died. I can only imagine what his family is going through.

"What's happened is an absolute tragedy. He was one of the real nice guys of Scottish football and a great player. I'd met him a few times but I knew his family well and played with and against his nephews."
